using [the aforementioned informational systems also] necessitates the [overall] development of [students»] strong
pedagogical data - literacy skills; (c) resources in addition to funding — including time, access to expertise, and collaborative opportunities — should be prioritized for sustaining these ongoing improvement efforts; (d) there must be a coherent structure of state - level
support for learning to improve, including the development of a strong Longitudinal Data System (LDS) infrastructure; and (e) educator labor market policy in some states may need adjustment to
support the above elements» (p. x).
A key part of the curriculum - linked professional development approach includes a hybrid form of professional development that
uses a limited number of face - to - face sessions and Web - based curriculum
support materials delivered over the Internet to promote teachers» geospatial science
pedagogical content knowledge in addition to science content knowledge.

support teachers in their understanding of the
pedagogical and mathematical implications of
using the formative assessment lessons and summative tests.
Using reflection to consider specific issues critically — such as the rapid rate of technological change, the design of technology for educational purposes or the
use of specific forms of technology to
support the situated nature of learning (Mishra & Koehler, 2006)-- provides preservice teachers with the opportunity to develop their technological
pedagogical content knowledge while engaging in meaningful reflective practice.
The majority of teachers noted that both their science
pedagogical content knowledge and geospatial
pedagogical content knowledge increased as a direct result of their
use of the curriculum and educative
support materials (Table 3).
We also discuss the
pedagogical possibilities of Twitter and point to hashtags like #comments4kids (where teachers can post student blogs and ask for feedback from their online networks) or teacher - created resources that
support the
use of technology in the classroom (like this tweet about how to comment on blogs, shared by one of our graduate students).
In these ways, educative curriculum materials can promote teachers»
pedagogical design capacity, or their ability to
use instructional resources and the
supports embedded in curriculum materials to adapt curriculum to achieve productive instructional ends (Brown, 2009).
Using the principles we offer above, we suggest that English language arts methods classes can infuse technology in a way that does not interfere with the content pedagogy but
supports it in a way that actively involves students and prepares them with the technical and
pedagogical skills for creating the new learning - centered classroom.
Meaningful engagement with technology during preparation
supports preservice teachers in their efforts to develop the technological
pedagogical content knowledge (or technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge [TPACK]; Mishra & Koehler, 2006) needed to understand «complex relationships between technology, content, and pedagogy and [
use] this understanding to develop appropriate, context - specific strategies and representations» (p. 1029) in their future teaching.
Teachers» abilities to
use technology effectively to
support student literacy development is reliant on several factors: their knowledge of technology; their knowledge of
pedagogical approaches; and their attitudes toward technology integration (Ertmer & Ottenbreit - Leftwich, 2010).
Although the video database was designed to help teachers master the challenges of inquiry - based social studies teaching of any sort, we have also
used specific cases within the database explicitly to provide models of teachers effectively
using technology to
support specific
pedagogical and content goals.
Should we, as educational technology leaders, concentrate our efforts upon developing, testing, and disseminating a wide range of educational technology
uses that
support a broad spectrum of
pedagogical approaches?
The TPCK model posits that context - neutral approaches to preparing teachers to utilize technology for
pedagogical purposes will generally fail because they tend to overemphasize pure technology skills as opposed to methods of integrating technology into teaching and
using technology to
support pedagogical goals (Mishra & Koehler, 2006).
More teachers in 2015 reported that when they received immediate PD
support in their classrooms, they were able to learn more about
pedagogical uses of the technology.
Pope and Golub (2000) have suggested several guiding principles specific to English teacher preparation for instructional technology integration, including (a) introducing different technologies that
support both instructional and
pedagogical goals; (b) reinforcing that teachers should know how to effectively model the
use of technologies to their students; (c) addressing how to evaluate technologies for instructional purposes; and (d) encouraging reflection and evaluation on instruction with and without technologies.
In order to create the right kind of
pedagogical content, as well as to
use the right
support, you do have to know who your audience is.

supports educators in
using digital resources, and proven
pedagogical strategies to enhance student learning.
