Using statistically modeled maps drawn from satellite data and
other sources, U.S. Geological Survey scientists have projected that the near -
surface permafrost that presently underlies 38 percent of boreal and arctic Alaska would be reduced
by 16 to 24 percent
by the end of the 21st century under widely accepted climate scenarios.
By comparing this fingerprint to the geochemical and isotopic profiles of 29 background surface water samples collected across the region, the team was able to determine where and to what extent contamination associated with brine spills had occurred, and rule out the possibility that it had been caused by other source

Future research also needs to consider
other dust processes, such as the
surface erodibility of different dust
source regions and how dust enters into the atmosphere, both of which have been studied
by Yang and his
other collaborators.
By using measurements collected from the U.S. DOE ARM's SGP sites and
other available
sources, this study shows that all participating models simulate excessive net shortwave and longwave fluxes at the
surface, but with no consistent mean bias sign in turbulent fluxes over the Central U.S. and SGP.
Certain particle compounds may directly generate ROS in vivo because of their
surface chemistry (eg, metals, organic compounds, and semiquinones) or after bioactivation
by cytochrome P450 systems (eg, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon conversion to quinones).6, 290 a, 290 b A particle
surface or anions present on otherwise more inert particles may disrupt iron homeostasis in the lung and thereby also generate ROS via Fenton reactions.291
Other PM constituents may do so indirectly
by the upregulation of endogenous cellular
sources (eg, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate [NADPH]-RRB- oxidase) 292,293 or
by perturbing organelle function (eg, mitochondria)
by taken - up PM components.261 Particle stimulation of irritant and afferent ANS fibers may also play a role in local and systemic oxidative stress formation.294 Given the rich antioxidant defenses in the lung fluid, secondarily generated oxidization products of endogenous molecules (eg, oxidized phospholipids, proteins) or a reduction in endogenous antioxidants per se may be responsible at least in part for the state of oxidative stress in the lungs (along with instigating the subsequent cellular responses) rather than ROS derived directly from PM and its constituents.
MM04 failed to acknowledge
other independent data supporting the instrumental thermometer - based land
surface temperature observations, such as satellite - derived temperature trend estimates over land areas in the Northern Hemisphere (Intergovernmental Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Third Assessment Report, Chapter 2, Box 2.1, p. 106) that can not conceivably be subject to the non-climatic
sources of bias considered
by them.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, mass trauma and explosions can cause a series of burn injuries and these include thermal burns, which are caused
by coming into contact with flames, hot liquids, hot
surfaces, and
other sources of high heat, as well as electrical burns and chemical burns.
As defined
by NFIP, it is a temporary or general condition of partial or complete inundation of two or more acres of normally dry land from: mudflow, overflow of inland or tidal waters, unusual or rapid accumulation or runoff of
surface waters from any
source, and a collapse or subsidence of land along the shore of a lake or
other similar body of water as a result of erosion or undermining caused
by waves or currents of water exceeding anticipated cyclical levels.
