The
show addresses how artists departed from abstract expressionism with in - depth concentrations
of works by Ellsworth Kelly, whose Tablet series documents how he abstracts everyday forms to create the shapes found in his paintings; Cy Twombly, whose strangely elegant paintings are sometimes built up with scribbles and scrawls, other times scratched
out with a screwdriver dragged across a painted
surface; and the twin pillars
of neo-Dada, Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns.
The collection also belies the impression Still's painting has progressively «thinned
out» during the past two decades; in fact, it
shows that he has alternated between thick, richly troweled
surfaces and more thinly applied pigments, surrounded by large expanses
of bare canvas, throughout much
of his career.
The
show includes a wood panel covered with black cedar shingles by Aaron Aujla (b. 1986); a vertical monochrome whose
surface is marked by circular holes, which turn
out to be the insides
of plastic caps for cans
of spray paint, by Dylan Bailey (1985); and a ghostly square monochrome whose
surface is made from horizontal rows
of strapping tape, translucent but reinforced with white string, by Chris Duncan (b. 1974).
Dodd probably most stands
out as a colorist, but her visual intelligence
shows best in her endemic dovetailing
of spatial structure with
surface design.
