Survey telescopes look at much
larger areas of the
sky — up to half the
sky, at any point — than does the Hubble Space Telescope, for instance, which focuses more on individual objects.
Seb Oliver, Head
of the HerMES
survey said: «The fantastic thing about Herschel - SPIRE is that we are able to scan very
large areas of the
sky with sufficient sensitivity and image sharpness that we can find these rare and exotic things.
Subaru is currently undertaking a massive
survey to image a
large area of the

The initial discovery
of this quasar (given the identity J1342 +0928) came to light thanks to the mining
of three
large area surveys: the DECam Legacy Survey (DECaLS) that is being carried out with the Dark Energy Camera on the National Science Foundations Blanco 4 - m telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile, NASAs Wide - field Infrared Survey Explorer (ALLWISE), and the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Su

This is the first Dark Energy
Survey map to trace the detailed distribution
of dark matter across a
large area of sky.
So Jewitt and Luu carried out two parallel
surveys: they used the Palomar Observatory's Schmidt telescope equipped with conventional glass photographic plates to scan
large areas of the
sky for the very faintest objects, while also watching a narrow field
of view in the plane
of the planets for rare but slightly brighter objects using MIT's 1.3 - metre telescope fitted with a CCD.
