The Marine campaign for me is the most intense
survival horror game yet (mainly because the Xenomorph is such a memorable character)- in terms of providing dread and checking every corner as you make your way slowly in the dark, it is unsurpassed (Dead
Space is a
very close 2nd).
Some of the isolated moments are
very fine: a shot of the horse galloping into view along a distant line of Mediterranean beach; a tilting shot of the struggle for
survival in the night waters as the ship (with decorous flames in its portholes) starts to go under in the background; great bursts of energy amid a garbled sense of time and
space in the horse race sequence.
Their
survival strategies are
very different, but watching them navigate that
space — and seeing how Alma ultimately solves this problem in a wildly unusual way — made for some of my favorite movie moments of last year.

Space is a more typical example of
survival horror in a science fiction setting,
very well polished and clearly taking influence from the best of its genre.
In general openness and scale is the enemy of tension, as Asylum's enclosed
spaces made the fight for
survival feel more urgent and in a world where you can simply run away, it loses a degree of dread; however Knight does a
very good job of permeating the world with a dense fog of tension.
The
very limited to the extent of stingy availability of ammo, equally limited inventory
space, limited amount of useful items and strategic placement of «Save Rooms» were the elements that both enhanced, intensified and actually justified the «
Survival Horror» tag for those games.
