The strongest argument against decoupling as a pathway towards
a sustainable human future isn't that it's impossible, as Hickel claims, but that it isn't occurring quickly enough to prevent unacceptable environmental impacts.

The outcome statement of the Rio +20 Conference on
Sustainable Development (2012) centred around ecological sustainability.2 If countries of the world are serious about the commitment made at Rio, then the MDGs need to evolve into a new framework; sustainability was not at their heart, and it is increasingly clear that without such an orientation, various «development» goals are impossible to meet for both the current and
future generations.3 As the report of the UN System Task Team on the post-2015 development agenda says, «the proposed vision and framework for the post-2015 agenda must be fully aligned with that (Rio +20) outcome».4 Accordingly, the theme of sustainability should be running through all the post-2015 goals (as should the themes on equity and
human rights), even as more specific environmental targets such as halting the erosion of biodiversity could be specified in one of the goals.

Disclosure Note I'm on the Interim Engagement Committee of

sustainable human progress on this finite planet.
Likewise, the U.N. has shaped a common understanding of the
future we aspire to: one built on the concepts of
human development,
sustainable development and the responsibility to protect, to name a few key elements.
The
future of
sustainable public transport could come through fueling buses with gas made from two of the things that we seem to have a lot of,
human waste and food waste.
Expanding renewable energy resources, in my opinion, is far more
sustainable in complex
human and natural systems over both the current life cycles and the
future potential.
Resilient communities, based on locally - generated solar and wind - generated electricity and local
sustainable organic agriculture, are the way that
human beings will live in the
future — if we are to have a
future.
And Warren quoted Cynthia Mitchell, an Associate Professor from the Institute for
Sustainable Futures at the University of Technology in Sydney, in his post P is for Phosphorus (As Well As
Human Urine):
Before we can find our way forward to a good enough

WWF's mission is to stop the degradation of the planet's natural environment and to build a
future in which
humans live in harmony with nature, by conserving the world's biological diversity, ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is
sustainable, and promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption.
Scientists are learning to study (study of ecosystem collapse in a North American lake) these changes and pushing for action to protect ecosystems both as the home to some of the planet's most threatened species and to give
human beings a
sustainable future on the planet too.
However, we believe that
human numbers are a major and long term driver of consumption and hence
human impact and that therefore a reduction in
human numbers can make a contribution to a
sustainable future.
Often justified largely on the basis of junk science they have come up with such wonderful policy prescriptions as using only unreliable sources of energy because they are «
sustainable,» keeping natural resources in the ground rather than using them to meet
human needs, having government tell manufacturers what requirements their products must meet to use less energy rather than encouraging manufacturers to meet the needs of their customers, all in the name of «energy efficiency,» substituting government dictates for market solutions on any issue related to energy use, and teaching school children junk science that happens to meet «environmentalists» ideological beliefs in hopes of perpetuating these beliefs to
future generations even though they do not conform to the scientific method, the basis of science.
WWF's mission is to stop the degradation of the earth's natural environment and to build a
future in which
humans live in harmony with nature, by conserving the world's biological diversity, ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is
sustainable, and promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption.
According to the authors, an improved understanding of the complex relationship between climate change and society is essential for modifying ecologically harmful
human behaviors and institutional practices, creating just and effective environmental policies and developing a more
sustainable future.
We are a network of South Africans calling for divestment from fossil fuels — and restorative reinvestment in
sustainable energy — to stigmatise fossil fuel use, accelerate
sustainable system change, help slow climate change, reduce the financial risks of fossil fuel investments, and so help secure our
human rights and common
future.
Recalling the concern reflected in the outcome document of the United Nations Conference on
Sustainable Development, entitled «The
future we want», 1 that the health of oceans and marine biodiversity are negatively affected by marine pollution, including marine debris, especially plastic, persistent organic pollutants, heavy metals and nitrogen - based compounds, from numerous marine and land - based sources, and the commitment to take action to significantly reduce the incidence and impacts of such pollution on marine ecosystems, Noting the international action being taken to promote the sound management of chemicals throughout their life cycle and waste in ways that lead to the prevention and minimization of significant adverse effects on
human health and the environment, Recalling the Manila Declaration on Furthering the Implementation of the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land - based Activities adopted by the Third Intergovernmental Review Meeting on the Implementation of the Global Programme of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land - based Activities, which highlighted the relevance of the Honolulu Strategy and the Honolulu Commitment and recommended the establishment of a global partnership on marine litter, Taking note of the decisions adopted by the eleventh Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity on addressing the impacts of marine debris on marine and coastal biodiversity, Recalling that the General Assembly declared 2014 the International Year of Small Island Developing States and that such States have identified waste management among their priorities for action, Noting with concern the serious impact which marine litter, including plastics stemming from land and sea - based sources, can have on the marine environment, marine ecosystem services, marine natural resources, fisheries, tourism and the economy, as well as the potential risks to
human health; 1.
