I've heard from the Flyertalk guys about the Boston to Dublin
sweet spot for Avios points.
These are some of my top
sweet spots for Avios and I think they show that despite recent devaluations, Avios can still be extremely valuable and offer some of the best redemptions available.
Not exact matches
If you've followed the points & miles game
for a while you may recall the
sweet spot that once existed when redeeming British Airways
Avios to fly Aer Lingus metal from Boston to Ireland.
Another
sweet spot is using
Avios for awards on Aer Lingus from the US / Canada East Coast to Dublin.
As a currency
Avios has taken a lot of hits over the past twelve months with partners like American Airlines and Alaska handing out fewer
Avios for travel and more
Avios are now needed
for short - haul flights (a one - time
Avios sweet spot)-- they've been a very poor option
for long - haul flights
for some time.
Overall there are still some decent redemptions to be had
for short - haul flights using
Avios but, once again, British Airways has removed one of the biggest
sweet spots in their award chart and that doesn't endear them to me any more.
The distances between these destinations stays in Zones 5 and 6
for Avios so the rates are pretty reasonable but the
sweet spot is getting to destinations in the southern part of South America, such as Santiago.
As you can see, the only true
sweet spot would be going from Boston to Dublin
for 75,000
Avios round trip.
To show you how good this
sweet spot is
for the BA award chart, United would require 60,000 miles
for a roundtrip business class redemption from DFW to CUN which is 30,000 more than
Avios (and twice the price)!

sweet spots for British Airways
Avios.

Going from Miami to Aruba (1,133 miles) is just under the 1,150 mile threshold
for the next
Avios zone, so it's a great
sweet -
spot to hit.

British Airways
Avios are some of the most valuable miles out there
for their «
sweet spot» redemptions on short - haul flights on American Airlines and Alaska Airlines, so they make up an essential part of any well - rounded travel rewards strategy.
One of the best options is to use British Airways
Avios for nonstop flights between the US and Ireland — although Aer Lingus «moved» Boston (BOS) and Dublin (DUB) further apart in order to charge higher redemption rates, you can still book flights with British Airways
Avios using off peak rates, which opens up a slew of new
sweet spots to choose from.

Using British Airways
Avios this way is one of the great
sweet spots in travel rewards as this would have cost 35,000 American Airlines miles each
for the exact same flight!
Another
sweet spot is an Economy award redemption from London to the USA East Coast (New York, Washington, Baltimore, and Boston) which only costs 26,000
Avios for the round trip in off - peak periods (but these flights come with heavy taxes making them not so attractive after all).
