The phrase
"sweetened varieties" refers to different types or versions of something that have been made sweeter.

I don't think we can actually get
a sweetened variety in the UK.
The dried coconut should be fresh and while I like to use
the sweetened variety which is made by combining coconut with powdered icing, you can use unsweetened dried coconut (shredded or flaked).
The instructions I got from the coop were that if I wanted it to act like
the sweetened variety to let it soak in water before using.
And make sure you use natural, unsweetened peanut butter — peanut butter of the hydrogenated or
sweetened variety will not do in this recipe.
