Funny, Ignition (the publisher who will live in infamy with me
from now on) didn't indicate on their website — amongst this shocker — all of the following absentee features that make KoF... well, KoF: No final boss, no
character intros / outros, only one win pose, only 6 stages (2 are effectively palette - swapped), no special effects when finishing a foe with a super, no arcing story, no teams... no nothing... With some 5 teams of 3
characters each still represented, and a few stragglers, it honestly feels like this
game was published incomplete, like the deadline was a
sword of Damocles, threatening doom.
There are less original references as we move forward, like Fyer's Banzai Bill shirt above
from Twilight Princess, but the Mario
characters we've seen do appear in later
games: Bob - ombs, for example, are present in Four
Swords and The Minish Cap, Thwomps can be found in Four
Swords Adventures and Oracle of Seasons, while Talon, the Mario - like ranch owner, goes on to appear in three
games after his Ocarina of Time appearance.
Most
characters have weapons that call back to the older
games in the series, such as Link being able to get the White and Magic
Swords as upgrades to his default weapon, or even the 8 - bit Wooden Sword
from an update.
Not to be confused with Peter Molyneux's also excellent
swords and sorcery
game, Bill Willingham's Fables follows the adventures of a clandestine community of fairytale
characters, driven
from their various homelands by «The Adversary,» who have now taken up residence in a magically concealed corner of New York City.
Gamers can embark on a quest to become a Master Builder by helping other LEGO
characters along the way — find a
sword for an Egyptian Queen, protect a fisherman
from a giant troll invasion, or build a home for a cyclops.

from growing up in an era where even the best
game stories featured
characters who could shrug off a nuclear explosion in «
game mode» with a healing potion, but who could then be fatally wounded by a single
sword swipe in «story mode», but I've always been able to compartmentalize what happens in a
game's story
from what happens in the gameplay when necessary.
