She's little more than a spoilt brat who treats everyone around her with contempt, even her loving father, Considine, the only remotely
sympathetic character in the film.
His steely stare is tempered by his innate and constant desire to do good, and his lonely, well meaning detective is by far the most
sympathetic character in the film, despite going through the least emotional and psychological turmoil.

film's most memorable moments belong to Streep's sometimes awkwardly
sympathetic character as she enters yet another boardroom populated by men or, later
in the story, when she emerges from the Supreme Court to find a sea of upturned faces of young women there to cheer her on.

Even science fiction intrudes
in the ruminations of a computer

sympathetic cop's patrol car; these musings stand
in, perhaps, for the missing Gorin
character, but disrupt the
film's tone.
There are some telling moments when they discuss material that was excised from the final cut, such as scenes that might have made other
characters in the
film more
sympathetic, but unfortunately none of this footage has been preserved on this disc.
The heart of the
film is the
sympathetic characterization by Jordan, who makes Oscar a decent, sincere
character, trying to do the right thing having gotten so much wrong
in the past (the
film's only real flashback is to him
in prison being given the tough love treatment by his mother).

sympathetic, the performances are first rate (especially Bridges), and it has one of the most perfect scores
in recent science fiction
film history.
