When you up - shift, the input shaft drops
in speed by ordinary friction, and the
synchromeshes don't need to work much
in order to match it to the speed of the output gear.
If the
synchromesh is no longer working fully, this would make it harder to shift
in every gear but it's still possible.
It's all the better with the manual, since the auto's shifts aren't the swiftest and the manual has a nice, light and fairly accurate action, improved upon its predecessor thanks to new carbon

in the «box itself and new pendulum weights for the linkage.

They are generally designed using manual transmission «internals», and when used
in passenger cars, have
synchromesh operated helical constant mesh gear sets.
A significant reduction
in mechanical resistance has been achieved through a large capacity
synchromesh, and vibration each time the clutch engages is supressed by a dual - mass flywheel.
