Apple and its iPad have the lion's
share of the educational
market locked up, but Amazon and its Kindle Fire are giving administrators reason to pause before blindly ordering up
tablets from Cupertino.
The third largest
tablet manufacturer was Samsung, whose
market share grew
from 5.5 % in Q3 to 5.8 % in Q4 2011, followed by Barnes & Noble with a 3.5 %
market share (down
from 4.5 % in Q3) and Pandigital, which held 2.5 % of the
market.
Looking at the above broadly, innovation by partners is helping keep Android growing, while Windows claws

Android
tablets come
from dozens of manufacturers all fighting for a piece of
tablet market share.
Apple's
share of the
market for
tablet computers fell to 50 percent in the third quarter as the iPad faced more competition
from Android devices such as Samsung's Galaxy
tablets and Google's Nexus 7.
The
share of the
market held by Android - based
tablets fell to 26.8 percent in the second quarter
from 34.0 percent the previous quarter, IDC said.
IDC said Apple had a 68.3 percent
share of the worldwide
tablet market in the second quarter, up
from 65.7 percent the previous quarter.
Many people in the industry are claiming the Kindle Fire is THE most popular Android
tablet in the last three months taking
market share away
from Samsung, HTC, and Blackberry.
• Amazon's Kindle Fire, a new
tablet computer introduced in late 2011, grew in
market share from 5 % of the
market in mid-December to 14 % of the
tablet market in mid-January.
According to new data
from the IDC Apple captured a 26.8 %
share of the
tablet market in 2017, meaning that roughly one in every four
tablets sold last year was an iPad.
In addition, while Samsung's Galaxy had a 60 %
share of the
tablet market in Peru in 2011, Apple is gaining: of the 57,800
tablets sold so far in 2012, 13,589 were
from Apple.
Within the Android
tablet market, Kindle Fire has almost doubled its
share in the past two months
from 29.4 percent
share in December 2011 to 54.4 percent
share in February 2012, already establishing itself as the leading Android
tablet by a wide margin.
The Kindle Fire grew in
market share from 5 % of the
market in mid-December to 14 % of the
tablet market in mid-January.
There is no denying that smartphone and
tablet ownership have usurped
market share away
from dedicated e-readers.
Some of the change is being attributed to bargain pricing
from competitors (with Amazon moving 4 million units and Lenovo shipping 3.7 million units, totalling over 11 percent of the
tablet market share together)... but other theories seem more likely.
That's five times the amount of Nexus 7
tablets Evans estimates were sold during the entire year in 2012, which indicates we're still very far away
from a situation where the
tablet market begins to look anything like the smartphone space in terms of Android
share.
Apple continued to win out in terms of
tablet market share this past quarter, according to the latest figures
from ABI Research, with a 55 percent
share of all shipments during the period.

It's also a considerable disparity with what we've heard
from the US, where the Kindle Fire has grown to over half of Android
tablet market share, so either there's a difference in methodology or the international
tablet market has grown enough to overtake the US - only Kindle Fire.
The bottom line... Every single quarter
from now on will see a drop in iPad
market share... Its inevitable... Just went to our local Best Buy and they had a new section dedicated to
tablets.
While Amazon does not publish sales figures, IDC estimated it sold 2.2 million
tablets in the quarter, a leap of 5,400 percent
from a year ago, giving Amazon a 5.7 percent
market share.
That would give Android
tablets 17.3 % of the
market up only slightly
from Android's 2010
market share of 14.3 percent.
Its
market share fell
from 60 percent in the third quarter of 2011 as the overall
tablet market grew by 50 percent to nearly 28 million.
But all along, another parallel story has been developing around the iPad (and other
tablet computers trying to take some
market share from Apple).
Apple increased its dominance in the media
tablet market with the iPad's worldwide
share rising to nearly 70 % in the second quarter, according to research firm IHS iSuppli — although Apple will face new competition
from Microsoft and Google in the back half of 2012.
Gartner said
tablets running Google's Android operating system will see their
market share rise steadily —
from 14.2 percent last year, to 19.9 percent this year, to 24.4 percent in 2012 and 38.6 percent in 2015.

A new report
from NPD DisplaySearch predicts that shipments of
tablets that are between 7 to 7.9 inches in size, such as the iPad mini, will begin to lose
market share compared to larger
tablet products, thanks in part to competition
from larger smartphones.
That narrowed Apple's
share of the
tablet market to 75 percent
from about 95 percent three months earlier.
As for Samsung, the Korean electronics giant saw its
tablet shipments decline
from 13.5 million to 11 million, while its
market share decreased
from 17.2 percent to 14.5 percent.
I think it's also to take
market share from other android
tablets that haven't been able to get any traction.
In regions with high PC penetration rates, however, it expects
tablets to continue to take
market share from the netbook and ultraportable segment.
Google's Android OS is forecast to increase its worldwide
share of the media
tablet market from 20 percent in 2011 to 39 percent in 2015.
