school for sports or other activities, these healthy snacks are great

As a new Administration
takes shape in Washington, with an education leader who has long been an advocate of parental
choice, the charter
school movement needs to redouble its efforts to turn happy parents into active warriors
for charter
schools and
school choice.
He also offered attractive
choices for parents living near the city borders, who could

take Peter Greene's excellent if unintended advice and spend more time arguing
for choice based on
school culture and values, and less on test scores.

choice policies have the potential
for an elegant accountability mechanism tied to the financing of outcomes, once students
take courses back within the traditional district
schools, that accountability mechanism would go away.
For example, by increasing «as the crow flies» travel distance from one mile to five miles, we more than double the number of families who could potentially
take advantage of a private
school or an intradistrict
choice policy.
Andrew Ujifusa and Alyson Klein of Ed Week note that the plan calls
for the creation of a new $ 1 billion program that will allow students to
take federal, state, and local education dollars to the public
school of their
choice.
Upon
taking office in 1999, the governor pursued a multipronged strategy of education reform: an emphasis on reading, standards and accountability
for public
schools, and new
choice options
for students.
But the real battle
for school choice will
take place in the states — under circumstances that can suddenly turn unfavorable to
school reformers.

The best of this work has
taken advantage of the lottery - based admissions processes used by many
school -
choice programs, enabling researchers to draw far stronger conclusions about how
schools affect student outcomes than the methods Coleman employed, which relied on simple regression techniques to adjust
for differences in students» family background.
Yet many of Illich's and Goodman's arguments foreshadowed criticism later

school choice advocates on the Right, where until 1996 the Republican party platform still called
