The review investigates two foci: the identification of
teacher actions influencing learning outcomes for Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander students and the methodological approach to how the influence of teacher behaviours on student learning has been determined.

A consistent focus on student engagement within and across AL projects at CPAHS has been
influenced by Munns, Sawyer and Cole's
Teachers for a Fair Go3, an
action research project on student engagement among low - SES primary school students in Sydney's South West.
The decision has already
influenced other California school districts, including San Francisco and Sacramento, to stop blindly laying off
teachers — and the lawsuit could be a model for more ambitious legal
action in other states.
For example, the outcome of data interpretation processes might not be
actions or decisions aimed directly at student learning; instead, it might be a search for additional types of evidence considered crucial to decision making, or push - back on some external
influences on data use considered unhelpful by principals and
teachers.
The framework for our overall project also points to the mostly indirect
influence of principals «
actions on students and on student learning.223 Such
actions are mediated, for example, by school conditions such as academic press, 224 with significant consequences for teaching and learning and for powerful features of classroom practice such as
teachers «uses of instructional time.225 Evidence - informed decision making by principals, guided by this understanding of principals «work, includes having and using a broad array of evidence about many things: key features of their school «s external context; the status of school and classroom conditions mediating leaders «own leadership practices; and the status of their students «learning.
Small
actions such as greeting
teachers warmly, smiling more, and offering to help pack up after a lesson can have a powerful positive
influence on
teachers and their work satisfaction.

The union still can organize job
actions, as when schools had to be closed for four days last year during the Capitol protests, or
influence board
action by crowding School Board meetings, as when elementary
teachers were unhappy with proposed changes to their planning time last spring.
In fact, a sense of job security (and not the bogus notion that you have a job for life; the knowledge that you can speak your mind and not fear for removal by your superiors and the knowledge that you will have due process if

teachers had high beliefs, but their context and level of technology skills strongly
influenced their teaching
actions.
By shifting focus from
influencing singular
teacher actions through individual classroom observations to increased involvement in and supervision of
teacher teams, principals can have greater impact on the
actions of
teachers and as a result, student learning.
