The screening of prospective
teachers for maladjustment 50 years ago and the
dispositions assessments going on today have remarkable similarities.
As a historian, I am most struck by the parallels between the
dispositions assessments of today's aspiring
teachers and the evaluations of
teachers» mental hygiene and personality that began in the 1940s and continued
for two decades.
Implicit in the prior discussion and Figure 1 are strong reasons
for schools to focus on skills rather than
dispositions: Skills can be taught, are typically publicly observable and specific, lend themselves readily to selection based on what the school or
teacher intends students to learn, and aren't heavily constrained by genetics.
