I value and believe strongly in articulating an identity of a
teacher educator as an
education professional operating in a «third
space» as a boundary spanner working in a territory given little attention in the scholarly literature.
Many in the
education policy
space are drawn to the idea that students» motivational beliefs about their capacities could boost their engagement in the classroom.21 Specifically, if
teachers can reframe students» beliefs about their ability, then students are less likely to fear or refrain from taking on a challenging task and will instead approach their work with optimism, in spite of its apparent difficulty.
In affinity
spaces, mentorship is distributed across many people (Gomez, Schieble, Curwood, & Hassett, 2010), and
teacher education programs may be able to harness such mentorship for their preservice
teachers» benefit.
