Unfortunately, existing research
in the area of
teacher quality has devoted very little attention to the enactment and implementation of tenure
reforms.
Indeed, improving the
quality of
teachers has been a core strategy for school improvement
in the New York City (NYC)
reform effort.
Given the vastness of the terrain, the course will be grounded
in three education policy /
reform initiatives that have gained considerable currency over the past decade: (1) Standards and Accountability (2)
Teacher Quality & (3) School Choice - Vouchers and Charter Schools
Other equity warriors followed the path carved by our nation's first black president, whose education secretaries (Arne Duncan and John King) also wielded their respective pulpits expertly, moving issues like «
teacher quality» front and center
in the
reform agenda.
The parents union, along with the parent empowerment efforts of StudentsFirst's New York affiliate (which is helping families
in the Big Apple's traditional district fight for school libraries as well as lobby for
teacher quality and other
reforms), is actively helping families do more than just have a voice.

While it may not be widely known, many of the positive changes seen
in education
reform over the past few decades — from replication of high -
quality charter schools to expansion of
teacher residency programs — have been made possible, at least
in part, through partnerships with AmeriCorps and other national service programs.

These sweeping generalizations are very effective
in removing all blame from the school system and preventing education
reform efforts that could ensure that EVERY child receives the same
quality of schools and
teachers that wealthy students enjoy.
What reformers should do is develop the tools that can allow families to make school overhauls successful; this includes building comprehensive school data systems that can be used
in measuring success, and continuing to advance
teacher quality reforms (including comprehensive
teacher and principal evaluations based mostly on value - added analysis of student test score growth data, a subject of this week's Dropout Nation Podcast) that can allow school operators of all types to select high -
quality talents.
