teachers in England, starting next year, have sparked fears that the pay reductions could fuel the
teacher recruitment crisis.
New
recruitment rules announced by the National College of Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) will allow initial
teacher training (ITT) providers to recruit as many
trainees as they wish, until a national limit is met.
Recruitment to these vacancies will need to be either from the limited pool of new entrants that completed their
teacher training in the summer but still haven't found a teaching post or from other sources — no new
trainees will enter the job market now until the summer of 2016.

The proposals would not make much of an impact on the

trainee teachers in subjects such as history and English, where courses are heavily over-subscribed.
Ms Blower said large numbers of
teachers leaving the profession, combined with a possible shortfall in the
recruitment of
trainee teachers, could be «disastrous for children and young people».
ASCL is also concerned that
recruitment agencies are offering incentives to
trainees on initial
teacher training (ITT) programmes to sign up with them rather than applying directly to schools, with one third of headteachers saying they were aware of agencies offering cash, laptops and tablets to
trainees if they signed up.
«We have removed the cap for schools and providers on training allocations for maths and increased the bursaries and scholarships available for postgraduate initial
teacher training
recruitment in maths, so that
trainees with at least a 2:2 degree will receive # 25,000,» said a Department for Education spokesman.
