Collectively, the 12 Design Challenges seek to attract the most talented students to
teaching, providing them and their practicing peers with support and actionable information about what good
teaching looks like; ensuring introductory and ongoing training that provides them with the requisite skills and knowledge for classroom and student success; identifying certification methods that are rigorous and performance - based; and forging new
career pathways where master teachers both anchor teacher training and ongoing knowledge development.
At many universities, the
Pathways to
Teaching Careers program, an initiative funded by the DeWitt Wallace - Reader's Digest Fund, recruits, selects, and trains uncertified school district personnel — primarily minorities already in the public schools.
And Maine describes its dedicated teacher leadership website, its commitment to
Teach to Lead, and encouragement of teacher
career pathways.
The Chartered Teacher programme also represents the first step in a move towards developing
career pathways focused on excellent
teaching, rather than leadership, and has a critical role to play in supporting teacher recruitment and retention.
Projects have included: teacher
career pathway programs that diversified roles in the
teaching force; teacher
career pathways that recognize, develop, and reward excellent teachers as they advance through various
career stages; incentives for effective teachers who take on instructional leadership roles within their schools; incentives that attract, support, reward, and retain the most effective teachers and administrators at high - need schools; rigorous, ongoing leadership development training for teacher leaders and principals, leadership roles for teachers aimed at school turnaround; and the creation of new salary structures based on effectiveness.

Young teachers today say that they are less motivated than previous generations by a
career in which their work responsibilities do not change over the course of their employment.16 Moreover, young teachers want to receive frequent feedback on their
teaching, and they want to be rewarded for proving their ability to help students learn.17

career pathways, schools and districts can mitigate one of the primary reasons for teacher attrition: a lack of upward mobility in the

career teachers are especially interested in «hybrid
teaching roles,» which provide teachers with leadership opportunities while allowing them to continue working with students part - time in the classroom.50 An added benefit of hybrid
teaching roles is that they expand the responsibilities inherent to a teacher's
career, enhancing how teachers are perceived as professionals and providing a rationale for higher teacher salaries.
Research shows that
