On the one hand, there are those who emphasize the importance of «objective» education to be obtained through
the teaching of Great Books, classical tradition, or technical knowledge.

Here's an experience I've had over time that I'm guessing you can relate to: many
of the
books I've read that have
taught me the most or had the
greatest impact on me do not appear on the recommended lists
of business luminaries, famous authors, or Hollywood stars.
The
book that arguably helped launched the open -
book management movement, The
Great Game
teaches owners and employees alike to think
of the numbers behind their business as a game.
I have taken issue with some
of Robert Kiyosaki's
teachings for years and have found it difficult to explain to people how it is a
great book but a horrible one at the same time.
Buddhism (in its true form) provides a guide to the elimination
of suffering, not deity worship; in fact never talks about God or gods in the sense the west does... FYI Buddha was born 630 years before Jesus, and it is proven that Buddhism traveled from eastern India all the way to Syria and the Middle East via the Silk Road... i am quite sure Jesus had heard some
of his
teachings... some
of the things that Jesus says are a direct reflection
of the eightfold path from buddhism... Jesus was the
greatest salesman
of all time... sold the most
books in history... he really honestly does nt deserve worship but an Academy Award
For several years I
taught Great Books classes to college undergraduates, and the European focus
of the four - semester sequence (the first part was called «Roots
of Western Thought») illuminated issues
of which Augustine made the first consummate exploration: personal identity, individuality, the inviolable and incommensurate self.
Since Latter - day Saints believe in continuing, modern revelation, that means that we follow what is in the canonized scriptures (Bible,
Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl
of Great Price) AND whatever our current leaders
teach.
This
book, in my opinion, is to actually minimize the
great apostasy taking place in our churches; especially among those who were never
taught the real meaning
of being «last instead
of first», to help those who come into the church who may bring with them societal norms
of entitlement and «whats in it for me» attitudes and behaviors.
159:4.9 «But the
greatest error
of the
teaching about the Scriptures is the doctrine
of their being sealed
books of mystery and wisdom which only the wise minds
of the nation dare to interpret.
To be sure, we have an expanded canon
of Scripture, but nothing within the
Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, or Pearl
of Great Price contradicts what is
taught in the Bible regarding the virgin birth (which, by the way, we definitely believe in),
teachings, miracles, atoning sacrifice, or bodily resurrection
of Jesus
of Nazareth.
Calvary Chapels place
great importance in the practice
of expository
teaching, a «verse by verse, chapter by chapter,
book by
book» approach to
teaching the Bible.
Sorry about the tangents, but it's always a
great point in a post to quote the
great Thoreau, I think he captures the heart
of what I desire in all humanity: «A truly good
book teaches me better than to read it.

And I have admit that I always give the «lawyer's argument» for the

teaching, while often merely alluding to criticisms both tentative and pointed.The Catholic approach is not appropriate for a teacher at a non-Catholic college, and my approach usually has the effect I can't completely explain
of making my smart Christian students more Christian.
