That's because Piper and many in the fundamentalist neo-Reformed movement are working off of a perversion of the doctrine of total depravity that not only
teaches that human beings are depraved — that is, that our humanity is marred by
sin — but that this depravity renders the world's men, women, and children into valueless objects of god's wrath, worthy of nothing more
than eternal torture, pain, violence, and abuse.

than a legalistic fulfillment of the Law.
And so what better place to
teach persons personally
than in a congregation where you have access to everything that makes up their personhood — their families, their work, the weather, their neighborhood, their

than him and
taught loving everyone (because we are all sinners), he did not advocate their behaviors and
sins.
I also happen to believe that a significant portion of the modern institutional church has completely forsaken following Christ's
teaching for a life of in your face activism and confrontation of perceived «
sin» rather
than sharing the good news in love, or even simply living the good news.
But other
than that, they've become a den of
sin — even their priests molest children, and they fell away from the
teaching of Jesus and his apostles long ago, worshiping saints and images instead of the One to be worshiped and adored.
Luther's insight that *
sin * is not «man turned down toward the earth rather
than up toward heaven» as the Catholic scholasticss
taught; but was «man curved in upon himself» was an insight that has been confirmed by contemporary psychology in its
teaching on narcissistic egoism.
We all realise that it is not the aspect of traditional Catholic
teaching on marriage which is going to inspire and attract in our secular age, but there is no mention of the «remedy for concupiscence» angle or much on Original
Sin, which I would have thought merited more
than a passing nod.
As seen in earlier posts through numerous quotes from Calvinists, total inability
teaches that mankind does not have a will to do anything other
than sin.
Christ
teaches that chastity is possible, even in difficult cases because God's grace is more powerful
than sin.3 Chastity, remember, is a fruit of grace, not a penance or a deprivation.
Paul, without denying the likelihood that some sinners will die without sufficient repentance,
teaches that the grace of Christ is more powerful
than sin: «Where
sin increased, grace abounded all the more» (Romans 5:20).
So instead of God being called a bully, we say his judgements are indisputable, unchangeable and everlasting; he is better
than us, high and lifted up, all powerful and holy; he is disappointed or sorrowful or angry about our
sin; he constantly convicts us by the Holy Spirit; he sends us suffering in order to
teach us, discipline us and inevitably bring us in line with his ways; and he threatens us with exclusion from him and his group now or forever in Hell unless we repent and straighten up.
But we should be confident that if we reflect more deeply on deeper themes connected with the Gospel — creation, providence, marriage, celibacy,
sin, redemption, resurrection, etc. — we will find the resources for understanding Paul's
teaching on homosexuality, even though Paul himself does much less
than many of us would like to explain the reasons behind the prohibition.
People too often talk about Jesus aside from his words, about his compassion towards all, while they fail to wrestle with some of his steepest moral
teachings: «Whoever divorces his wife... and marries another, commits adultery; Everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart; If your right eye causes you to
sin, tear it out and throw it away; I have come to bring not peace but the sword; Whoever loves father or mother more
than me is not worthy of me» (Mt 19:9, 5:28, 5:30, 10:14, 10:37).

Luther was correct when he challenged the Medieval Catholic Scholastics over their

Now one doesn't have to parade the concept «

teachings, that the united cry of the Nation will be heard on high, and answered with blessings, no less
than the pardon of our national
sins, and the restoration of our now divided and suffering country, to its former happy condition of unity and peace.
