The pace
of technological change requires an expert
teacher workforce that is flexible, knowledgeable and
skilled in understanding how best to leverage the use
of technology to enhance student learning.
To further illustrate this distinction, it is useful to consider an actual example
of a preservice
teacher who learned
technological skills that enhanced her classroom instruction.
In this course, preservice
teachers learn technology
skills as they collaborate with their peers in mathematical investigations, as they learn to use a variety
of technological resources and to adapt to new technologies that will foster the understanding
of their future students, and as they share their mathematical and
technological expertise to enrich the common learning experience.
TPACK holds potential for helping
teachers develop understanding
of how technology can be integrated into teaching and learning, regardless
of the shifting
technological capabilities and their required
skills.
The
teacher candidates noted that they also benefited from seeing how such a learning environment could be structured so that student learners are allowed control over their learning (
technological content knowledge), the use
of acronyms to guide procedural knowledge development (
technological pedagogical knowledge), and the level
of technical
skills required to teach with technology (
technological knowledge)-- all
of which increased their own
teacher knowledge about teaching with technology (Figg & Burson, 2009).
Media arts is a unique medium
of artistic expression that can amplify and integrate the four traditional art forms by incorporating the
technological advances
of the contemporary world with emerging
skill sets available to students and
teachers.
With the advent
of computer technology, both the pedagogical
skills and
technological content knowledge
of the
teacher play a role whenever computer technology is used in the classroom (Mishra & Koehler, 2006).
By providing
teachers with a model for tracking and assessing their knowledge,
skills, and daily lesson preparation within a framework that incorporates
technological instruction, we hope to raise awareness about how these domains impact classroom instruction on a daily basis, as well as promote increased awareness
of developing
teachers» responsibility to provide authentic and content - specific technology instruction.
Stressing that technology must become an integral part
of the teaching and learning process in every setting supporting the preparation
of teachers, NSTA (2003) noted that general teaching
skills should include the successful use
of technological tools, including but not limited to computer technology, to access resources, collect and process data, and facilitate the learning
of science.
This is rare when you are dealing with
teachers who have a wide range
of technological skills and confidence.
According to the published results, some
of the more positive aspects
of the study aside from the improvement in standardized test scores were greater access to books, an increased enthusiasm towards reading, more improved and numerous resources for
teachers, and better familiarity with
technological skills.
