Given electronic probes generally respond more quickly to fluctuations in air
temperature than mercury thermometers, it follows that this method — instantaneous recordings from an electronic probe — would result in new temperature maxima under the same weather conditions.
Somewhat surprisingly, the automatic weather stations at Mildura for these three Septembers recorded statistically significantly cooler
temperatures than the mercury thermometers.

So, if you have two identical glass greenhouses with thermally isolated
mercury thermometers at equilibrium in the sunlight [One with Air at Press =P, and the 2nd w / CO2 at Press =P], and you close the blinds — you will see the thermometer in the CO2 greenhouse retain its
temperature longer — not because of any «global warming» type effect, but simply because Air conducts heat to the walls of the greenhouse better
than Air does.

There are many more maximum
temperatures measurements available for the electronic probe (n = 948)
than for the
mercury thermometer (n = 115), and the distribution is quite different, with a somewhat more normal distribution for the probe data, as shown in Figure 2.
As the
mercury plummeted to 40 below last weekend in Alaska's Interior,
temperatures around the North Pole topped - out some 70 degrees higher — about 32 degrees Fahrenheit, some 50 degrees Fahrenheit warmer
than normal at the pole.
Normally this
temperature difference is climate - related — although this year in Phoenix, during the final seconds of Jack Newton's session on cloud computing, the
mercury in the room rose a little higher
than even the Valley of the Sun could take credit for.
