A vital goal of all movements in quest of social liberation is
consciousness -
raising, an omnibus
term which involves (among other things) making the oppressive factions of society aware of what it's like to be oppressed.
In the biographies of J. Alfred Smith and David Bartlett, we find both spiritual formation and the development of social
consciousness (Hunter), which may be
termed conversion and
consciousness -
raising experiences.
In these
terms the unity of
consciousness which Hartshorne
raised previously is explained by Brightman in interactive
terms between distinct
consciousness and not in
terms of a continuum (my word) of one single
consciousness.
