Though results are mixed, most home visiting studies find that the early
intervention of home visiting can improve both short - and long -
term outcomes for children who are at - risk
of being maltreated by positively
impacting not only the outcomes listed above, but perhaps most importantly, the mother - child relationship (e.g., Black et al., 2007; Guttentag et al., 2014; Karoly et al., 2006; Olds et al., 1998).

of the most widely - cited early
intervention programs with high - cost savings — the Perry Preschool program and the Abecedarian program — were associated with long -

Given the high prevalence
of child maltreatment and the serious consequences in
terms of its
impact on the lives
of the individuals concerned, their families, and society more generally, it is important that we identify effective methods
of prevention and
intervention, and there are some suggestions that a public health approach is now needed.27 Although there is limited research available in
terms of what works to prevent child maltreatment, there have been significant gains over the past 20 years in
terms of the development
of new approaches.
Group parenting programmes have been shown to have a positive
impact on the mental health
of children and parents in the short
term.9 — 12 Positive results have been obtained from randomised controlled trials and other studies with parents
of children with clinically defined behaviour disorders, 9,13,14 children at high risk
of behaviour problems, 9,15 and to a lesser extent with normal populations.16, 17 They have also been obtained in trials
of interventions for parents and children
of different ages.18, 19 The number
of trials carried out in the UK is small.13, 15,20,21 A recent systematic review concluded that these programmes are effective in the long
term, 12 but most
of the trials on which this review was based used a waiting list control design, and as a result outcome data are not reported on the control groups beyond 6 months.

interventions to reduce experiences
of early adversity may also be able to ward off early biological damages with long -
term health

of support programs and
interventions are warranted in
terms of their uptake and
impact on families affected by a parent's cancer.
