Nearly half of
teachers expect to have to deal with an increase in redundancies in the next two to three years and more than a third (37 % and 36 %) expect an increase in long -
term sickness and repetitive short -
term absences.
Mental health issues result in
teachers suffering from long
term sickness, meaning that temporary members of staff are required to cover these
absences.
Mr Gibb said: «Such
absence is still a problem but it is clear that more head
teachers are refusing simply to wave through parents» requests to take their children out of school for
term - time holidays.
Where possible, for longer -
term placements, the class
teacher should accompany the student on the first day of placement to ensure all parties are aware of the procedure for notifying of any
absence, issues etc. (in front cover of «work placement diary» as well as ensuring that both parties are aware of health and safety, legal requirements from both sides and having a designated point of contact.
The costs of
teacher absence, both in financial and academic
terms, can no longer be borne in silence.
