The painter Mike Cockrill, who has made his own contributions to the notion of immature sexuality, and once sued David Salle for copyright infringement (he won a $ 2,000 settlement), urged that art be taken on its own terms.

Although many different styles are encompassed by the term, there are certain underlying principles that define modernist art: A rejection of history and conservative values (such as realistic depiction of subjects); innovation and experimentation with form (the shapes, colours and lines that make up the work) with a tendency to abstraction; and an emphasis on materials, techniques and processes.

This naming device mocks gendered terms of endearment and ownership, and it points at the patriarchal aspects of art making and of naming things.

In terms of content, much of the work this year seems to be revisiting the crisis of the «post-medium condition» (e.g. the liberation of a painting from having to just be a painting), as famously described by critic Rosalind Krauss, albeit from a retrospective — perhaps even nostalgic — point of view, imagining possible futures for art - making in the wake of both rapid progressions in technology and the dematerialization of the art object.
