Opening one floor
of the biennial is a large installation by the Occupy Museums group, part
of their ongoing «Debtfair» series which began in 2015 (Debtfair Whitney, 2017); amongst
other elements, it includes a slideshow featuring
testimonies from
artists across the country describing the financial straits they are in, and what jobs they do to get by.
The ones left by our species as a
testimony of our passage on earth, those created by
artists sharing their vision
of the world, and
others oscillating between natural and man - made, organic and manufactured.
Researching official and unofficial records, media coverage, oral
testimonies, and
other relevant materials, Kent Chan is excavating a little - known episode
of Singapore's curatorial history: the first group exhibition
of Singaporean
artists in Europe.
Other themes at the exhibition include a mixed media installation by Guillermo Bert, which features video
testimonies of L.A. immigrants projected onto suspended tumbleweeds; multiple slide projections and audio narratives exploring what it means to be a second - generation Filipina by looking to the past, present and future by
artist Michelle Dizon; and a video installation that critiques systemic patriarchy and misogyny by Michele O'Marah.
