For the
testimony of St.
John to the transcendent and pre-existent Divine being
of Jesus Christ sticks in the gullet
of the modern, «radical» or «liberal» scripture scholar.
Just as the disciples went back to tell
John of what they had seen and heard, so also, we hear about Jesus through the
testimony of others.
If we do not link the
testimony of the Spirit to the eschatological trial, we would hardly understand why he is called the Paraclete («But when the Counselor comes
John 15:26, 27).
The first epistle
of John evokes the «dramatics»
of testimony and trial.
In the two texts we commented on earlier (
John 5:31 - 39; 8:13 - 18), we should be struck by an expression which indicates the externalization

It is a seeing
of what was seen in that the
testimony is about something that happened in space and time, something that could be seen with the eyes and touched with the hands, and which is part
of events that preceded and followed; it is also a seeing
of what can not be seen, in
John's terms, a «knowing,» in that God who can not be seen is revealed in the events.

John brings is not simply a witness to an historical event, as one might, for example, tell others about a parade that passed in front
of one's house.
The Fourth Gospel, which ignores both the baptism and the temptation, says that on the day after
