The key thing to note is that sometimes all of the
economy saver
awards sell out before all of the business saver
awards do — and the price of the
economy award tickets are then actually higher
than a business class
award seat on the same flight.
However, you may give up more
than you would by booking an
award flight with the airline, so it's important to compare when booking
economy tickets.
If you want to use SkyMiles to book a flight on Air France, you're going to pay 10,000 more miles for
economy class and 30,000 more miles for business class
than if you booked an
award flight on Delta.
Do note that Flying Blue's best
award redemptions tend to be in
economy class vs business and offer low rates to places like Hawaii, Central and South America, and even Europe at costs less
than many of their partner airlines included Alaska or Delta.

award seats available on the same flight, but I've often seen four and six

On the whole,
Economy Class
awards on partner airlines have always been even worse value
than Economy Class
awards on American's own aircraft — mostly due to the surcharges that partners like British Airways add to
award tickets.
Warning: If you're intending to fly in
economy class, you might be better off paying for the ticket
than spending the money to attain miles to get an
award ticket this offer.
Most
economy class redemption levels, with the exception of Taiwan domestic
awards and flights between North and South / Central America, are less competitive
than what's offered by U.S. - based programs.
Economy cabin
awards on this route are often easier
than premium seat redemptions.
Aside from a few short - haul
economy flights we paid for out of pocket, the only costs we encountered were taxes and fees on our
award tickets — all of which cost less
than an
economy fare would have on any of the flights.
In this case, you'll benefit from a different set of rules
than with all -
economy awards:
I've often said that, generally, I can't bring myself to cough up the extra miles needed for a First Class
award ticket when Business Class on most airlines is more
than good enough for me (that's not me being low - maintenance, that's just how good the Business Class hard product often is) but I'll happily do whatever it takes not to sit in
Economy.
It would be good news for some if the airline was to price Premium
Economy closer to
Economy Class
than to Business Class (in terms of miles needed for an
award) but it may be bad need for Business Class
award availability if Emirates shrinks Business Class cabins to accommodate the new product.
The Virgin Atlantic Dreamliner has fewer Premium
Economy and Upper Class seats
than both the A330 and A340 aircraft so I suspect this won't do much for
award availability on this route.
Mileage earnings on Delta flights will soon be a lot better
than in the past (across most fare bookings) and the cost of most
Economy Class transatlantic
award have come down....
By choosing to fly with miles rather
than paying by cash you'd be getting a return of around 2.2 c / mile — which isn't too bad for an
economy award.
On top of this the A380 offers more Business Class seating
than the 777 (good for
award availability) and the
Economy Class product is more comfortable - its a win all round.
Of course, as I discussed in my first article on travel hacking theory, I do value that
award trip at more
than $ 790, in fact, I value it at about $ 1,300, since that's what I'd typically pay for an
economy class ticket to Europe.
