I loved the look of the stencil but if you ever go to stencil a tabletop, I'd recommend using chalk paint rather
than latex paint.
It does have a higher price
tag than latex paint but it really is worth all the hype.
Because you used something
other than latex paint and you needed a protective layer?
One thing I quickly learned was that acrylic paint works much
better than latex paint for the stencil.
They come in two varieties of silicone and latex with the silicone being firmer and more
lasting than latex.
There are also hybrid gel mattresses, which are a little
softer than latex mattresses.
Keep in mind, floor, porch and patio paint has a completely different texture and
consistency than some latex paint, chalk paint or even milk paint.

Michele, it's just plain white paint — any brand will do, although if you have chalk paint, it dries
faster than latex or acrylic paint.
Acrylic craft paint is so much easier for me to buy and work
with than latex paints are, so I am quite pleased to know I can use craft paint to make chalk paint.
The oil paint makes the finish just a bit
glossier than latex, but it makes cleaning and wiping down the cabinets a lot easier too!
Another benefit to alkyd is it has a longer drying
time than latex paint so it does not show brush strokes as much, an advantage when painting trim, woodwork, and cabinetry.
Note: With chalk paint, you will not have to take your cabinets off of the hinges because the paint is
thicker than latex paint.
I found that using chalk paint is much easier than using latex paint mainly because you don't have to take your cabinets down and the drying time for chalk paint is much
faster than latex paint.
I wanted to use oil - based paint because it's more
durable than latex, but apparently oil - based paint yellows over time, and I definitely didn't want that to happen.
That means you will come across silicone models more
than latex.
Keep in mind that Chalk Paint ® dries 50 % faster
than latex - so you must do this as you proceed through your painting versus waiting till you are done getting paint all over an entire side.
Using kilz oil base primer should keep the cabinets from yellowing and limit the paint chipping after the whole process because it's sealing in all of the dark color and oil base paint is more durable
than latex.
