The surface is a half inch narrower than the iPad and just a hair wider
than the Fire HD.
It definitely streamlines the Amazon experience and if you're well - invested in Kindle Books and Prime video, there is little need for much more
than the Fire HD has to offer.
Of the others, only the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 and the Amazon Fire (7 - inch) did worse
than the Fire HD 8 2016.

than the Fire HD 10 despite the smaller size.
That's longer than the average tablet (8:47) and slightly better
than the Fire HD 10 (9:05) but shorter than the Lenovo Tab 2 A10 (12:00).
For example, the 6 - inch Huawei Ascend Mate 7 has a 4100mAh battery but is just 7.9 mm thick and 185g — much thinner and lighter
than the Fire HD 6 (granted, it costs more than four times the price).
If the idea of a $ 99 tablet appeals to you and you want something bigger
than the Fire HD 6, $ 99 just happens to be the discounted price of last year's 7 - inch Kindle Fire HD, certified refurbished.

In terms of specs, you have an 8 inch HD screen (1920 × 1200), an ample 16 GB of storage space expandable by a MicroSD slot, and a higher megapixel front / rear facing camera
than the Fire HD.
That's just a bit better
than the Fire HD 10 (6 hours, 14 minutes), though neither last as long as the Tab 4 10 (8 hours, 11 minutes).
It's got a better processor and more RAM, and it definitely runs things a little more smoothly — though still not anything earth - shattering —
than the Fire HD 8.
Apple's cheapest tablet — the 9.7 - inch iPad — is an excellent tablet that starts at $ 330, but that's still hundreds of dollars more
than the Fire HD 10.

Amazon made enough minor changes here to make this year's
Fire HD 8 slightly better
than the old model - then it slashed the price and made it really worth considering.
The single Dolby - enhanced speaker, located on the bottom edge of the tablet, lacked bass (more so
than on the standard
Fire HD 6 model) when I listened to «Turn Down for What» by DJ Snake and Lil Jon.
In testing, we saw the
Fire 7 operate slightly slower
than the
HD 8, even pausing while it loaded apps.
The
Fire HD 8's run time of 10 hours and 58 minutes on the Laptop Mag battery test (continuous web surfing at 150 nits) is more
than 4 hours longer
than the time from the
Fire 7 (6:53) and more
than 2 hours long
than the time from the
HD 10 (9:04).
However, the 16 GB version of the 8.9 - inch
Fire HD costs $ 100 less
than the Nexus 10 and offers better viewing angles.
But it's noticeably lighter
than the 13.9 - ounce Amazon Kindle
Fire HD and 13.1 - ounce HP Slate 7.
This makes the screen (if held in portrait mode) slightly wider and roughly an inch deeper
than the Barnes & Noble Nook

I would have preferred a microSD card slot to augment the measly 8 GB of onboard storage that comes with the

than it does in the 10 - inch one, with the likes of the Nexus 7, Kindle

HD 7 and many others all offering good tablet experiences at bargain prices.

Once on the home screen, the Kindle
Fire HD's interface is more minimalist

Alas, Anthony, I don't know of a way to change Amazon's robotic voice — other
than perhaps installing regular, full - strength Android on the
Fire HD.
It's a lot more flexible
than other budget Android tablets like the Kindle
Fire HD and Nook
HD, thanks to its lack of a restrictive custom user interface.
At 436 lux, the
Fire HD is slightly dimmer
than the original
Fire (460 lux), but outshone both the Nexus 7 (314 lux) as well as the category average (355 lux).

Despite the
Fire HD's heritage as an enhanced e-reader, Amazon intends this device to be used primarily in landscape, rather
than portrait, mode.
The back of the Kindle
Fire HD, which wraps around to the front of the tablet, is coated in a soft - touch material that's not as gentle on your fingers as the Nexus 10, but more comfortable
than a metal - backed tablet.
The Nook
HD is narrower
than many of its 7 - inch competitors: It measures 5 inches wide and stands 0.43 inches deep, to Kindle
Fire HD's weirdly wide 5.4 inches (and thinner 0.4 inch).
