This past year, mechanical engineer James Friend of Monash University in Australia crafted a robot motor just a quarter of a millimeter in diameter and 2 millimeters long,
smaller than the head of a pin.
But in this case the aircraft is piloted by 25,000 rat neurons in a tiny dish, hooked to an electrode array hardly
bigger than the head of a pin.
Sönnichsen's team of scientists have designed a sensor no larger
than the head of a pin but capable of performing a hundred different individual tests on a surface that is only of one - tenth of a square millimeter in area.
TUM (microTUM), is about 400 by 800 microns, or millionths of a meter, smaller
than the head of a pin.
Larval ticks may be smaller
than the head of a pin, whereas some adult ticks are larger than a corn kernel.
* The snail's mouth is no larger
than the head of a pin, but it can have over 25,000 teeth!
Imagine having a fax machine that's smaller
than the head of a pin, lighter than a feather, mobile enough to take everywhere, and useful enough to receive faxes from anywhere.
