In fact, functionally, vitamin D3 is 300 % more effective
than vitamin D2!
Vegan Vitamin D3 is now available, which is more absorbable
than Vitamin D2 in the blood (which is the form found in most non-dairy milks and fortified foods).
Vitamin D can be absorbed by the body in the supplement form of Vitamin D2 and D3, however, Vitamin D3 is far superior in absorbability and efficacy, so much so that it's twice as effective at raising vitamin D levels in the body
than vitamin D2.
It is possible that the vitamin D concentrations of the milk would have been higher if the mothers had been consuming only vitamin D3, the animal form of vitamin D. Vitamin D is carried into breast milk attached to the vitamin D - binding protein; 21 since one study found vitamin D2 to have a lower affinity than vitamin D3 for the vitamin D - binding protein, it may be that vitamin D3 is much more effective
than vitamin D2 at raising the levels of vitamin D in milk.
When it comes to supplementation, The Vitamin D Council recommends taking vitamin D3 rather
than vitamin D2.
In the early 1970s, Swedish researchers showed vitamin D3 to have a substantially higher affinity for human DBP
than vitamin D2.49 Their sample size was not reported and probably very small, and they unfortunately could not test the calcidiol forms of these vitamins because 25 - hydroxyvitamin D3 was at that time not yet commercially available.
Two groups of researchers have shown vitamin D3 to be between five44 and ten45 times more effective
than vitamin D2 at raising serum levels of calcidiol.
