Clerical
Celibacy did not become the norm in Roman Catholic Church until the 11th century.
The reason why the false link
between celibacy and abuse is made seems to be ignorance regarding the real reasons why sexual abuse happens.
It has always admired and usually demanded
celibacy from its priests.
At the same time, and as the NRB rightly notes, there are undoubtedly in the priesthood many men afflicted by same - sex attractions who are nonetheless good and faithful priests living lives of
chaste celibacy.
According to a letter written by senior pastor Fred Harrell on behalf of the Board of Elders, «We will no longer discriminate based on sexual orientation and demand
lifelong celibacy as a precondition for joining.
As explained at more length in a following answer, the number of Catholic priests who have committed the awful crime of abuse is too many but small, and smaller than professions in

But Jesus
says celibacy can only be accepted by «those to whom it has been given.
In fairness, however, to this view and to
voluntary celibacy among Protestants where this is found, it should be clear that the divine vocation, or calling, is not the same for all persons.
One of the common criticisms of a traditionally Christian sexual ethic is that it forces a lot of gay people into

I am puzzled because the current discussion on priestly
celibacy within Roman Catholicism consistently locates the debate in the context of the diocesan, or secular, priesthood.

demanding celibacy of all those who are homosexually inclined.

celibacy know about how to build a successful marriage?
Why not clearly state that if one is not * called * to
celibacy then you most honor God by being united in marriage (or whatever union is legal) with your partner?
If celibacy were understood in this wayby mothers and fathers, and proposed thus by bishops, priests and teachers, I don't think we would have a vocations crisis.
Should singles be forced
into celibacy just because they're not interested in, willing or able to be part of a committed, monogamous relationship?
So celibacy, in and of itself, isn't a vocation in this sense» (75).
The first is that Jesus did not, like Paul,
advocate celibacy as a higher state than marriage.
