If your puppy whines and paws to get out of the crate because he dreads being closed there, wait for him to calm down and
then open the crate.

This can be difficult, so if you do not have a lot of time
then it is a good idea to put the dog in his
crate before you
open the door.
If there is any doubt about whether a door might be left
open,
then a
crate inside or a runner in the backyard is the safest option.
Have the
crate in this area with their bedding and some toys and the
crate door removed or tied
open,
then at the furthest point from their bed set up a potty area for them to use (newspapers, potty pads).
You can also tease your puppy with a toy and
then toss it into the
crate and close the door so your puppy can't get it —
then open the door and let him run in and praise him.
This is called an «extinction burst» sort of like a pup in
crate that whines and the owner
opens the door every single time he hears the whining, but
then that day the whining doesn't work, the dog starts scratching the
crate's door and throwing a tantrum that gets the owner running to get him out.
There is one side door, and
then another door that
opens from the top of the
crate to allow for super easy access of maneuvering your dog in or out.
Then show him a treat and toss it in the
crate, still leaving the door
open.
It's best to close all doors and windows in the barn,
open the
crate door in the evening,
then leave.
Close and latch the
crate, walk out of the room until you are out of sight and
then return to the room, but do not
open the
crate immediately.
Instead, wait 10 or so minutes,
then, when your dog is settled down, praise her and
open the
crate door.
Over a several week period, leave the door
open at first and
then shut the
crate door for a few seconds to several minutes.
Wait a minute or two to get him eager to enter the
crate and
then open the door to let him have his reward.
Or, if your puppy is in his
crate, have your puppy sit,
open the
crate door, take the pup by the collar, snap on the leash and
then say, «Let's go» and walk your puppy quickly to the door.
Then casually walk over to the
crate and
open the door, holding it firmly so there is no chance that it will move and frighten your dog as he is moving around the
crate.
Some
crates open on the top, and you can
then reach a hand in, to place on the puppy to settle her, so she doesn't feel alone.
Come back and wait until he is quiet, and
then ask him to wait in the
crate while you
open the door.
