No one in seminary
education can have been unaffected in the «70s by the surge
of women into ministry and by the
theological issues that
women are raising.
Represented were the Urban Training Organization
of Atlanta, the Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral
Education in Chicago, the
Women's
Theological Center in Boston, the New York
Theological Seminary and the former Urban Academy
of Chicago.
The Rev. Joseph W. Knowles describes the goals
of the Renewal Center Mission as (1) developing the Life Renewal Center through small «groups,» (2) giving attention to the use
of present structures to focus the whole life
of the church as a healing community, (3) developing a program
of supervised clinical pastoral
education for
theological students, and (4) maintaining a Residential Center halfway house for twenty men and
women who have been previously hospitalized for mental illness.
Our
education, service and advocacy depend upon the adequacy
of our
theological vision — the way we interpret Scripture and tradition regarding relations between
women and men, sex, marriage, parenting and violence.
A chapter called «Praxis and Solidarity» explores the push
of many in the church for a more direct relationship between
theological education and specific contexts and «underrepresented constituencies,» such as blacks,
women, Hispanics, Native Americans and Third World peoples.
Stackhouse states his thesis about
theological education with admirable clarity: «The vocation
of Christian
theological education is to prepare
women and men to be theologians and ethicists in residence and in mission among the peoples
of God in the multiple contexts around the globe.»
They have prepared many college teachers, leaders
of the ecumenical and other interdenominational enterprises, and have trained men and
women for other special types
of ministry which do not fit readily into the traditional pattern
of theological education.
The fact
of the matter is that the Church should spend more time protesting the higher costs
of insurance, the higher costs
of higher
education, the inequities in K - 12
education, demand that physical and mental abuses stop, and let GOD be the judge
of a
woman's right to care for her own body... On a
theological note... where in the Apostle's Creed (summary
of catholic doctrine) does it mention anything about contraception anyway?

How shall administrators and teachers gain help from such generalities as they struggle to find answers to pressing questions about the extension
of the curriculum to four years, about the place in it
of Greek and Hebrew, about making better provisions for the
theological education and employment
of young
women?
