the theological meaning of names and events which figure prominently in the «history,» for example, circumcision and Gilgal, 5:8 f., and Achan and the Valley of Achor, chapter 8.

It has almost seemed that in every epoch there were some who were primarily interested in
naming the
name of Christ, clarifying its doctrinal and
theological meaning, and defending that
meaning against its enemies — but who
named the
name without giving the cup
of water.
In a later chapter we shall have occasion to point out that all preaching worthy
of the
name must be
theological, by which I
mean that it must be, as the very adjective indicates, «a word about God» and hence about God's decisive action for humankind in the event we
name when we say «Jesus Christ.»
