When you see that
there are
signs of mental illness, it might not be your job to suggest what to do or how to resolve it, but it is perfectly acceptable to listen and be a friend.

There are many professionals who can offer help when someone is in crisis or may be experiencing the
signs and symptoms
of a
mental illness or addiction.
The few times this happened
there were obvious warning
signs: either a history
of serious
mental illness including suicidal ideations, or addiction to dangerous narcotics — typically opiates.
And that can really prevent people getting help, and can prevent them also getting the help that they need, because we know for example, in the early years, that interventions that help when
there are
signs of mental illness, or where
there is a
mental health diagnosis, they can really change the course
of a child's development for the positive.
