In both kittens and adult cats with small numbers
of worms,
there may be no clinical
signs of infection.
There are two points in the disease process that cause the majority
of clinical
signs that affect our cats: (1) the arrival (and death)
of the juvenile
worms in the blood vessels
of the heart and lungs, and (2) the death
of adult heartworms.6
Other
signs to watch for include coughing, vomiting, diarrhea (especially if
there are
signs of blood),
worms in his stool, lethargy, an appearance
of a «pot belly,» weight loss, dull coat or scooting his bottom across the floor.
Usually,
there is no outward
signs of an infection until the
worms start attacking the nervous system.
I make my estimate
of worm burden based on the number
of unprotected months
of mosquito exposure, age
of the dog, and whether
there are any outward clinical
signs of disease (as opposed to just a blood test result).
