Some of the shapes resonate organic, vegetal motifs, annular forms with a visceral consistency of
thick paint played against thin, as in «Catalunya» (2008).

The body - proportioned canvases are animated and energized by the viewer — Grotjahn's airy and atmospheric surfaces motivate observers to move their bodies in space from side to side, as well as bending, stooping and stretching, in order to see the
play of light on his
thick application of
paint.
In his
paintings in particular he
plays with these familiar shapes and renders his works into patchworks of color blocks and
thick lines.
One of the sixteen small
paintings that
plays with me — holds me — the most is grounded by shiny reflections reminiscent of pennies in a wishing well, layered with these
thick, orgasmic (for the painterly painter), awkward rectangles of material exploration which bar out Washington like stacks of gold or grids of currency, all finally subtitled with the words, «I HOPE IT RAINS» — maybe or maybe not a reference to the Louis Prima song, «Pennies from Heaven.»

play to his 19 years in the Navy, and Boo Ritson's large - scale photographs of people she transforms into characters caked in
thick paint, which have sold out in her second solo show only a year after graduating.
On the monitor's screen, a video
plays; seen only through its reflection, the video shows the
painting process as captured through the same
paint - smeared lens that Tan used to make the
thick stripes.
Utilizing a number of different supports including canvas or linen, fiberboard and marble dust panel, Olson
plays with the notion of surface and framing as constructs in his work, at times, employing handmade frames and
thick borders of unpainted surface around a central
painted field that act as both a physical edge to the
painting and call attention to its nature as both an image and an object.
