When I was first walking around in the world with Tariku, it used to be a lot harder for me to speak up when people said boneheaded
things about adoption or race.
One of the hardest
things about the adoption process is that there's too much time to overthink it, and a million legitimate reasons to get cold feet.
Which leads me to my next piece of advice - many well - intentioned people say assinine
things about adoption.
If I could change only one
thing about my adoption journey it would be the above sentence.
In their initial meeting, they take in a lot of new information — along the way, they'd heard so many
things about adoption that now feel untrue — it's eye opening to hear a completely different perspective, one that makes perfect sense once they're aware of it!

I just adopted a great little 4 1/2 yr old springer who went 6 months without an
adoption because prospective adopters were skittish
about her urinary incontinence caused by having been spayed at too early an age (a fairly common
thing).
