For the first time since becoming a mother, I was thinking less about how I didn't want to parent and more about how I did want to parent, particularly as it concerned my child's spiritual formation.

While I think my grandmother always saw cooking as her intrinsic duty, I think my mother saw cooking as a trap designed to keep her from more intellectual pursuits.

Kids from that era had the benefit of growing up during an extreme cultural paradigm shift (e.g. feminist movement, deconstruction, dawn of digital age, etc) which seemed to bring a fair amount of empowerment with it, so maybe they've just been socialized to think that there supposed to be doing MORE than what they saw their mothers do.
As far as her children rebelling, if they get older and choose to take 30 minute showers or use paper towels like they are everywhere, I bet that their mother will cringe and shake her head, but I can think of a lot of other areas where rebellion is much more serious and more important.

I think if hearing mothers can just block the noise out and focus on their baby's face, they may be able to pick up more particular signals.
