When people hear the term, digital citizenship, most people
think of helping students to protect their privacy and be aware of their digital footprint.
Not exact matches
University program designers can review a cross-section
of portfolios to glean invaluable information about whether their programs are
helping students develop core overarching skills, such as writing, ethical savvy and critical
thinking.
Reflecting on the past three years, I couldn't
help but pause and
think how far we've come from our first class
of 17
students.
To explore the places where design
thinking and lean startup intersect, we organized a conversation between two faculty members who
help run the Stanford Graduate School
of Business Startup Garage, where
students design and test new ventures.
We started
thinking about how we could take this group
of highly knowledgeable, experienced college -
student tutors who had availability and match them up with
students who needed
help at any given time.
I'm always
thinking about how to
help our
students get more out
of our course.
GREENBLATT: Well you know I taught at Columbia as I mentioned for the last 22 years and so I tell my
students that first day
of class actually, I tell them that you know I don't
think there's a lot
of social value in being an investment manager, it's not that I don't
think investors who do work set
help set prices and allocate capital and all those things, but I just
think A, they're not very good at it, and B, it'll get done without you.

Haley Zink, a 21 - year - old community college
student who
helped to organize a «sibling march» in St. Louis, Missouri, had a message for those who
think this movement is just a bunch

He not only provides detailed explanations
of the text all the way through (which providing lots
of footnotes for those who want to research in more depth), but he also provides theological asides that
help the
student of Scripture see how the book influences our life and
thinking today.
Jamaal Curry: Our
students go in a lot
of directions after graduation, and I
think the college / university should act as a springboard to
help students get in that direction they want to go in.
I don't
think our contemporary regime
of lite reading for college
students is a one - way ticket to Gehenna, but colleges could do better and parents could
help them by including some little lit among the bedtime stories.
The teacher's approach to such problems might start from three assumptions: (a) the teacher should be concerned with how science fits into the larger framework
of life, and the
student should raise questions about the meaning
of what he studies and its relation to other fields; (b) controversial questions can be treated, not in a spirit
of indoctrination, but with an emphasis on asking questions and
helping students think through assumptions and implications; an effort should be made to present viewpoints other than one's own as fairly as possible, respecting the integrity
of the
student by avoiding undue imposition
of the lecturer's beliefs; (c) presuppositions inevitably enter the classroom presentation
of many subjects, so that a viewpoint frankly and explicitly recognized may be less dangerous than one which is hidden and assumed not to exist.
The faculty adviser can
help a
student find opportunities, both in choice
of courses and elsewhere, to
think through his own philosophy
of life.
Thus the clinical and theoretical material is integrated; psychological and theological understanding is related; and the
student is
helped to
think critically about his own work, to benefit from the insights
of his peers as well as those
of his teachers, and to honestly face the problems involved in his relationships with others.
The purpose
of courses in theology and ethics, then, would not be to explore ethical «positions» or «systems»
of theological
thought as such but rather to «
help students to become practical Christian thinkers» (106).
I
think we should clear up the notion that lots
of people seem to have that Bill Nye somehow needs the publicity
of this statement and that he's somehow not qualified to speak on this subject: Bill Nye is a noted astrophysicist who designed planes for Boeing, was a
student and friend
of Carl Sagan, and
helped design parts
of the Mars Rover.
In
Helping Children Succeed, I write about an emerging school
of thought in educational psychology that focuses on the importance
of students» motivations and mindset.
In this century, deeper - learning proponents argue, the job market requires a very different set
of skills, one that our current educational system is not configured to
help students develop: the ability to work in teams, to present ideas to a group, to write effectively, to
think deeply and analytically about problems, to take information and techniques learned in one context and adapt them to a new and unfamiliar problem or situation.
I
think that is part
of our emphasis on nutrition — we serve
students fresh fruit, fresh produce, and breakfast every day and I
think that's
helped them be ready to perform academically.
While I don't mean to minimize the plight
of financially disadvantaged
students, I couldn't
help but
think how much I'd rather have my child eat a simple sandwich than some
of the highly processed food my own district regularly serves.
And she found that it's incredibly predictive, that people are pretty honest about their grit levels and that those who say, «Yes, I really stick with tasks,» are much more likely to succeed, even in tasks that involve a lot
of what we
think of as IQ: She gave the test to
students who were in the National Spelling Bee and the kids with the highest grit scores were more likely to persist to the later rounds; she gave it to freshmen at the University
of Pennsylvania and grit
helped them persist in college; she even gave it to cadets at West Point and it predicted who was going to survive this initiation called «Beast Barracks.»
She suggests that teachers
think about the purpose
of each assignment and she offers professional development and tools on how to create assignments that are relevant and engaging for the
student — or «doable,» as she puts it — without the
help of others.

As this year's legislative session nears, I can't
help but
think that
students — and public education — are having a Groundhog Day experience
of their own.
«I
think it is very rare for a graduate
student to have direct opportunity, so quickly out
of graduate school, to see their research really be translated, able to
help patients in a really, really, rapid way,» Kotterman says.
«These
students become aware
of the different jobs within a lab, different ways
of thinking, and have also a direct link with real scientists who can
help them for their future orientation.»
I like to
think I'm
helping inspire the next generation
of students, as I was inspired by my own field station visits years ago.
The Lindamood - Bell program focuses on
helping students develop the sensory and cognitive processing necessary for reading, such as
thinking about words as units
of sound, and translating printed letters into word meanings.

of advisers out there who suffer from a failure

Without exception, my
students recognized that this online method

helped to improve their writing and critical
thinking skills.
Talking to your peers,
students ahead
of you, and people who have earned doctorates in your discipline can
help you realize that many others — including those who have successfully completed their degrees and moved on to satisfying careers — have had similar
thoughts at one point or another.
Not only should a good adviser
help students explore new ways
of thinking and learning, they should also act as their advocates,
helping them to network and develop professionally, willing to «put their careers at least on an equal footing with their own,» says Soffa.
«At the macro (policy) level, I
think it's important to offer a wider array
of opportunities, than traditional academia, for scientists to do interesting and important work (industry and government)-- and to
help doctoral
students become aware
of and train for these outlets for their creative work,» Amabile writes.
«One
of the goals
of this project is to
help students think about labs as environments where science is practiced, [but] also [as] an environment that's shaped by culture and by norms,» says Julia Kent, CGS's director
of global communications and best practices and Denecke's co — principal investigator on the project.
Baker
thinks this kind
of information could ultimately
help teachers and guidance counselors figure out not only which
students are at risk
of academic problems but also why they are at risk and what can be done to

«When I
