I am not certain that this idea is exactly found in Scripture, but regardless of what the original founders
thought about the pursuit of
happiness, and whether or not it is actually taught in Scripture, the pursuit today is not so much
happiness, but pleasure or personal fulfillment, even when such things come at the expense of others.
God accepts whatever we bring to the God / person relationship — our physical and spiritual condition, personality, connection to reality, our participation in relationships, talents, inabilities, cognition, knowledge, ignorance, life journey, spiritual journey, walk
about, wandering, seeking, questioning, questing, acceptance of God, rejection of God — and our emotional and mental status: hate / love, anger / peace, sadness /
happiness, hurt / health, feeling lost and abandoned / feeling found and included, agitation / serenity, apathy / passion, confusion / clarity, fractures / wholeness — all of this, all of whoever we are and have ever been and every action committed or ever contemplated and every
thought we ever explored or entertained or that flitted through our mind — all of this, we bring to the God / person relationship and God accepts the totality of who we are and every component that comprises who we are — as a gift.
It's tougher in some ways to live well — to find humanly worthy
happiness — in our time, when so much human effort is directed toward
thinking through the «how» (technology) and so little directed toward
thinking about the «who» and the «why» (who we are and what we're supposed to do).
If we now suppose this feeling of unity to be taught as a religion, and the whole force of education, of institutions, and of opinion directed, as it once was in the case of religion, to make every person grow up from infancy surrounded on all sides both by the profession and the practice of it, I
think that no one who can realize this conception will feel any misgiving
about the sufficiency of the ultimate sanction for the
happiness morality.
At least we leave open the
thought that Satan acts subtly and by indirection, perhaps by including us in a dominant narrative that makes promises
about security and
