The console is also shaping up to be an indie powerhouse of note, so that got
us thinking about indie titles we'd like to see on the machine.
The title I got the chance to review this past week got
me thinking about the indie scene; that title being Castlestorm.
This book will hopefully be helpful to people just starting out (or
thinking about indie publishing) as well as those well down the path.
An article in today's New York Times Sunday Styles section got
me thinking about the indie - film phenomenon of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl: a young woman who's beautiful and quirky and perfect in the eyes of the lovestruck, mixed - up guy who falls for her.
More importantly, the book was a bit of a paradigm shift in how
I thought about indie books.

thinking about some of my favorite movies over the years

think it's fair to say that when people talk

indie movement in the book world, we're really talking
about a broad set of configurations from small presses to collectives of writers to individual authors, whether they create their own imprint or just operate as a self - published author in the Amazon or Smashwords universes.

think it's great these professional organizations are allowing
indie authors into their groups, though I suspect over time they too will come to recognize how commercial results alone are an inadequate measure of professionalism because ultimately they'll shut out professional authors — wonderful writers — who write
about unpopular or arcane topics.
The CEO of Smashwords, Mark Coker had some interesting
thoughts on what customers are starting to notice
about indie e-books.

indie» but never pulled the trigger.
If, as an author, your intent is to create a book that will help you build towards a franchise of books from which you could one day make a living, or to create a book that takes your career to new heights or is a marketing tool for your business, then
think about becoming an
indie publisher and not an
indie author.
If you are an
indie author — or
thinking about self - publishing — this is a book you need to consider reading from cover to cover.

Yes, it seems like a human editor could easily go through and make judicious choices, rather than machines, but then things will operate more like the NYT bestseller lists, where someone is manually approving bestsellers rather than letting the market dictate (something else
indie authors are very upset
about; they
think the NYT list should be numbers only).
Now, the thing with being an
indie writer is you have to
think about things that when traditionally published you don't -LSB-...]
Also
think about what makes them different / unique, and what formats they'll be available in, and whether you plan to publish via traditional publishers,
indie, or both.
The first 6 months I had a knot in my stomach that wouldn't go away,
thinking about all I had to learn and do, but I've found a true support system in my fellow
indie author friends, who have guided me every step of the way.
