Flooring In A Basement Last week you read all my basement saga and just how difficult it is to remove
thinset from concrete.
This is a tile setting mat, you use it instead
of thinset mortar to adhere your tiles to the wall.
My husband was told by a tile specialist that if we want our white grout to stay white, than its important to install
White thinset under the tiles that are being installed.
Last week you read all my basement saga and just how difficult it is to
remove thinset from concrete.
Adding more lateral weight to the original adhesive is a bad idea if you don't know what the original compound was, since
different thinsets and mastics are designed for different shear weight.
Apparently
Gray thinset, if applied under the tiles, can seep into white grout and cause discoloring.
I've done lots of tiling in the past couple of years — our kitchen, bathroom and even stone tile on the fireplace in our last house — and it would be nice not to have that whole step, the work and the mess,
of thinset.
Sharon, I totally agree with what you said about the white grout, my contractor used
white thinset, didn't make any difference.
I buy my grout and
thinset from Monterey Tile in Chandler, lately I've been getting tile from Home Depot just because I need small batch (couple of pallettes).
You'd probably save a good portion of material that way, I also got
my thinset from lowes (I bought and carried it, Mapei) and the grout I picked up from Big D's tile over off Elliot.
Mastic and
thinset both age and lose elasticity over time, which is why tiles eventually start falling off walls on their own (i.e., nothing is forever).
So wood look a like tile is now under $ 2 sqft,
thinset and grout is about $.20 a square ft, so roughly you are at $ 2.25 in materials, so that's $ 2.75 in labor per sqft.
Water beads up because of the wax, and I have scraped drips of paint, caulk and
thinset / mortor off of them and I have been really happy with their durability.
@Sharon & Helen: Re the «white
thinset»; having renovated four bathrooms within the past year «n half and though the majority of tile was in off - white (s) with coordinated grout; I was told the same by the installer.
Do you know if
the thinset installed under the tile was white in colour?
The tile was not the problem, (easy) scraping
the thinset off the floor / base was labor intensive AND dusty!
I literally showered every 2 - 3 hours that weekend because I had to wash off all of
the thinset and dust from cutting tiles before I could feed my son.
2) Apply your (WHITE)
thinset / morter with a 1/4» notched trowel on only the area that you're ready to put sheet of tile on.
The notched trowel gives
the thinset some «tooth» for the tile to grab onto, but because glass tiles are see - through, you want to smooth out the notches with the smooth side so the notches are underneath and not visible.
We ordered all of the bead board, trim, lumber, faucet, backer board,
thinset, grout, a sink and a toilet.
But we did
the thinset, tiling, grouting & finishing ourselves.
Chris said it was pretty much the worst stuff in the world to work with, like
the thinset that you use when laying tile, but way harder to spread.
Thinset and grout ended up being left over from the job we were working on that week, score!
