Half of dog owners and
a third of cat owners purchase Christmas gifts for their pets, according to the American Pet Products Association's 2013 - 2014 National Pet Owners Survey, and pet specialty stores with a variety of holiday - themed pet products — in addition to the latest trends in popular gift - giving categories like treats and toys — are poised for a successful fourth quarter and a very happy holiday season indeed.

a third of cat owners will buy holiday gifts for their pets this year?
• Top notch nutrition was the number one pledge, with 55 % of cat owners and 46 % dog owners pledging a better diet for their pet • Followed by exercise and activity, with a fifth promising more walkies for their dog and one
third of cat owners committing to more playtime • Spending quality time together was also ranked as a top priority — from giving more cuddles and ensuring our pets have a warm, comfy bed to daily teeth brushing and providing regular flea treatment
The AVMA survey indicates two -
thirds of all cat owners understand the importance of preventive care checkups, which is far higher than other industry reports.

A study published in Diabetic Medicine in 1992 showed that as many as one -
third of the pets living with people with diabetes — usually dogs, but also
cats, rabbits, and even birds — exhibit dramatic changes in behavior when they sense a drop in their
owners» blood glucose.
Chapter Manager Edie Sayeg explains, «So many people rescue dogs and
cats and, while rabbits have become the
third most popular companion animal, most
of the public shelters in Georgia will not even accept them from
owners wanting to give them up.
Almost two -
thirds (61 %) believe too many people have negative impressions
of cat owners.
A full two
thirds of the
owners who let their
cats roam say they would not be able to retrain their
cat to stay indoors or use safe outdoor options such as leash walks or catios.
Half
of the
cat owners felt that their
cat's presence and companionship was most helpful, followed by a
third of respondents describing stroking a
cat as a calming and helpful activity.
More than a
third of dog
owners and over half
of cat caregivers (38 %
of dog
owners and 58 %
of cat caregivers) say their animals «hate» going to vets; they are less likely to visit their veterinarian.
Nine out
of ten pet
owners surveyed by the American Humane Society say they now consider their pet a member
of the family, which helps explain why more than a
third (37 percent)
of dog parents and a similar population
of cat owners have their pet's picture primarily displayed in their house and why 14 and 10 percent respectively display them at their place
of work.
