of the ones you're
thinking of are the ones that dispense soda and
junk food.
But you need to
think of most vegan meats and cheeses as being completely processed
junk food.
There's a myth that's grown up I
think because
of both the celebrities and because we have all
of these vegan
junk foods, a lot
of processed
foods that's kind
of expensive.
When I started eating healthier many years ago, I retrained my brain to focus on all the
foods I could have versus
thinking about what I wasn't choosing to eat anymore (sugar, refined grains, lots
of processed
junk foods, etc.).
While most dips are full
of bad fats (
think cream and mayo) and served with even more
junk food like potato chips, we've found some perfectly healthy recipes that you can serve with sliced vegetable sticks, organic tortilla chips, toasted triangles
of whole wheat pita bread, mini-rice crackers, you name it!
Well, I shared a modified version
of my Lunch Tray post over on the Huffington Post and I've been interested to see that many HuffPo commenters just don't
think junk food snacks at games are a problem at all.
However sometimes I
think it's just expensive
junk food, that we tell ourselves is better — which it is, sort
of.
It's hard to
think of blueberry crunch whole grain breakfast cereal as
junk food.

I post it here not as an indictment
of school
food, as I don't
think it's even compliant with federal regulations, but just as possibly the most ridiculous attempt ever to «health - wash» a
junk food.
And to both you and Andrea (below), I guess I wasn't really
thinking of my beloved enchilada as
junk food (though it certainly wasn't the best entree I could've been eating.)
Until that day arrives, I
think we desperately need to get
junk food out
of schoos so they at least are not contributing to the problem.
Just
think about it: if you were trying to balance a very tight budget in an operation which lives or dies based on how well students accept your
food, and if many (sometimes, the vast majority)
of those students came from homes in which nutritionally balanced, home cooked meals are far from the norm, and if the
food industry was bombarding those kids with almost $ 2 billion a year in advertising promoting
junk food and fast
food, and if you had no money
of your own for nutrition education to even begin to counter those messages, and if some
of those kids also had the option
of going off campus to a 7 - 11 or grabbing a donut and chips from a PTA fundraising table set up down the hall, wouldn't you, too, be at least a tiny bit tempted to ramp up the white flour pasta, pizza and fries and ditch the tasteless, low - sodium green beans?
I originally
thought this was a good thing, not realizing that the holiday events would always involve
food and that they'd literally put up a sign - up list requesting a lot
of junk food and a few token «healthy» items like veggies and fruit.
I have been getting so much useful feedback and information for my book from two surveys I've been circulating: one asking you about the notion
of «kid
food» and your general
thoughts about the role
of junk food in your kids» lives, and a second survey just for public school parents, asking your
thoughts about school meals, a la carte snacks and on - campus

Think about small habits that you can improve that will help you work toward your big goal, such as waking up earlier to work out in the morning, eliminating your late afternoon

of the TV, or reminding yourself to drink more water.
I
think giving our kids heaps
of junk food at Easter (and other holidays) sets a precedent that associates celebrations with unhealthy
foods.
And don't
think for a second that all
of that
food is
junk food.
Today we have the huge, comfortable modern gym filled with cheap equipment and mostly full
of people who periodically work out either because they
think they are supposed to do that, wearing flashy clothes and checking their facebook in between sets, or as a way to wash off their guilt for consuming all that
junk food and not taking any general care
of their bodies and spirits.
I'm sure that most
of you already know how important the consumption
of nutrient dense
foods is, but there are those that
think that eating
junk food is not a big deal if they exercise regularly.
