Goss is not concerned
here with the validity of Whitehead's conception of God, but rather to demonstrate that Camus» writings leave open the possibility of God as understood by Whitehead, and that Camus»
thoughts on rebellion and its source in the beauty of nature are compatible with and made consistent by a
process notion of God.

The relativity that Newton
here rejected is not the relativity that Einstein propounded; and although the Special Theory of Relativity has shown Newton to be wrong in some respects, and in particular has shown that we should not
think of time by itself in complete independence of everything external, time is related to space, and also to velocity, contrary to Newton's opinion, it has not shown that time is relative in Newton's sense, and merely some numerical measure of

Although I am concerned
here particularly with Whitehead, I do not
think that the notion of ordinalism pertains idiosyncratically to him.6 For example, the «cosmology» that he found in Plato's Timaeus strongly influenced his metaphysics in
Process and Reality (xiv).
The latter is a tangled problem at best, but it is clear that among the important founders of the
process perspective — specifically I mean James, Peirce, Bergson, Whitehead, Dewey, and Hartshorne — it is Hartshorne's work which comes closest to being a kind of personalism.1 Whitehead explicitly sets aside the personalist perspective in Religion in the Making, considering its claims beyond the possibility of being established.2 On the other side, a number of personalists have been sympathetic to
process thought, and Brightman is surely principal among them.3
Here I will not investigate the question of whether personalism in general, or even the idealistic type, is reconcilable with

It should not be surprising then that Whitehead
thought of God as a single actual entity immune to the possibility of loss.59 At least William Christian sees this as the proper Whiteheadian view.60 Nevertheless, Christian's position is challenged by Ivor Leclerc, who argues, in agreement with Hartshorne, that Christian's conclusion is incompatible with the categoreal scheme elaborated in chapter two of
Process and Reality.61
Here, according to Leclerc, Whitehead «makes clear» that the category of «subjective perishing» is «necessarily applicable to every actual entity whatever, including God.»

The question that Christians (or other religious people) should ask themselves
here is philosophical rather than sociological: Granting (as I
think we must) that modern science has given us new and often penetrating insights into reality and that modern technology has enormously increased our control over our lives, is it not possible that in the
process some very precious things have been lost?
There are serious students of Whitehead who are persuaded that the closing sections on God in
Process and Reality are inconsistent with his previous writing and

The influence of these older evolutionary cosmologies on Whitehead's
thought, moreover, is never carefully examined so much as it is presupposed.1 Against such presuppositions, I shall argue
here that evolution and evolutionist theories play no significant role in Whitehead's metaphysics, and that there is no evidence in his major works of any significant influence from earlier
process - oriented «evolutionary cosmologies.»
